In is hometown of New York City, Alex is best known as a guitarist and for playing the tres, a steel-stringed Cuban cousin of the Spanish guitar.  His work experience has ranged from being musical director of a 10-piece Latin band to playing as a sideman in numerous touring groups to working as a studio session musician.  One of those sessions was for gold record producer Dan Grigsby, who went on to produce Uno, Alex's first album of original compositions released under his own del Zorro Records label in 2010.  Alex's greatest musical passion is playing traditional Cuban son music, and as a performer he artfully blends his own original songs with standard favorites in intimate duo performances as well as with his group, the del Zorro Modern Son Quintet.

Alex's musical training and development have been underway since the age of four when he started taking piano lessons.  Three years later he also started taking guitar lessons and at age 13 began attending in the Mannes College of Music studying classical guitar with Stanley Dorn.  He started his career performing trio jazz at cabarets and clubs in NYC like Don't Tell Mama and the now-defunct La Cave on First, where he played his first steady gig at age 19.  In college he played piano in the Duke University Jazz Ensemble, and in 1999 was granted permission (back when one still needed it!) to travel to Cuba to study at the National Arts School (ENA) in Havana.  He continues to hone his craft with private instruction from master guitarists.
